Ambtenaren van de stad New York hebben zich door de Stichting Vrienden van de Gay Krant laten voorlichten over het in Nederland opengestelde burgerlijk huwelijk.

Door alle aandacht voor Nederland in het kader van de festiviteiten rondom de viering van 400 jaar betrekkingen tussen Amsterdam en New York is er ook hernieuwde aandacht ontstaan voor de mogelijkheid om in Nederland te trouwen.

In menig koffertje van Nederlandse feestvierders in New York zat een exemplaar van het pas verschenen boekje ‘No gay marriage in The Netherlands’ . Ook de website met de historie van de 16 jaar durende strijd voor de openstelling mocht zich de afgelopen dagen verheugen op een enorme belangstelling.  De Amerikanen zijn vooral geïnteresseerd in de passage:

“Is it possible for foreign gays to marry in The Netherlands?

They can, but it is not easy.
Two non-Dutch people can get married in the Netherlands if they are staying here on a more-or-less permanent basis. For example, two Turkish men (or women) who both do not have the Dutch nationality, can still apply for a Dutch marriage certificate.
A couple who wishes to get married needs to comply with a few rules:
1) Prior to the actual wedding a couple needs to get a marriage license, or a ‘publication of the banns’ (ondertrouw) This has to occur at least two weeks before the wedding, but preferably two months.
In order to obtain the marriage license one must supply a copy of a birth certificate and a document stating one’s marital status, either unmarried or legally divorced. These documents must be officially translated into English or Dutch. The documents are to be handed in at the ‘municipal registry of births, marriages and deaths’ (de burgerlijke stand) at the city hall in The Hague. The official wedding, however, can take place in any Dutch city or town.
2) The couple needs to obtain a temporary address, for the period from the publication of the banns until the wedding. This could be: friends, relatives, or even a hotel, as long as it is an address where you can receive mail.
The marriage bears no legal effects outside the Netherlands. It is believed that countries that in the future ‘adopt’ the opening-up of the civil marriage to same-sex couples will also grant the rights with  retroactive effect.
In the Netherlands the civil marriage is completely separated from the church wedding. A church wedding can only occur after the civil wedding and has no legal effects.”

Bij de redactie van de Gay Krant komen nu dagelijks verzoeken binnen van Amerikaanse stellen die een tijdelijk postadres zoeken in Nederland.

De New Yorkse ambtenaren hebben van de stad de opdracht gekregen te onderzoeken wat de gevolgen kunnen zijn wanneer veel Amerikaanse stellen zouden besluiten in Nederland te trouwen en vervolgens in eigen land daarmee rechten te willen claimen.

Zelfs de nieuw benoemde bijzonder ambtenaar van de burgerlijke stand en initiatiefnemer van de openstelling van het burgerlijk huwelijk Henk Krol wordt de afgelopen dagen overstelpt met Amerikaanse  verzoeken.
